RFID Sensors

RFID technology is utilized to provide low-cost sensing solution and item tagging requirement for mainly three IoT application sectors: Retail and Supply Chain, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), and Precision Agriculture (PA) or smart farming. This technology uses an electromagnetic signature for data encoding, which significantly reduces the cost of an RFID tag or sensor. RFID sensors can be either chip-based or chipless. Chip-based RFID tags consists of an integrated chip (IC) to store the data and a high gain antenna to act as a transceiver. On the other hand, chipless RFID sensors have ample benefits over traditional chip-based sensors because of their lower cost, lightweight, robustness, and lower radiated power. The abolition of battery and IC provides this type of sensor a maintenance free lifelong operation. Further, Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) antennas function either as an integral part of the sensing device or as the RF transceiver front-end of the RFID reader.
