Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) based sensors

Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW) are acoustic wave travelling along the surface of an elastic solid whose amplitude decays exponentially with time and depth of the substrate.. These waves travel on the surface of the sensing resonator at a speed much slower than electromagnetic waves. To incorporate sensing ability, a thin film coating of a suitable smart material is deposited on the surface of the resonator. Such smart materials exhibit an inherent ability to sense and react to a change in its environment. SAW based sensors holds promise to deliver robust, low-cost remote-controlled passive sensors that can measure and monitor various physical parameters through a wireless link. As a result, SAW tags can be used to provide low-cost sensing solutions to IoT application sectors like retail and supply chain, Structural Health Monitoring and Precision Agriculture.
